MANUAL & STRATEGY ASSISTANCE FOR DUNE II

“PREPARE YOURSELF TO FIGHT FOR THE CONTROL OF THE SPICE AND THE UNIVERSE…”

Dune-HP is surely the most developed game of strategy on HP. However, a small introduction is required in order to start playing the game.

This game is based on the book, film and PC game Dune II. Dune II on PC was one of the first games of strategy played in real time: it was widely played and is thus well known (for my part, I spent many long hours playing). The HP version is, of course, not as good as the PC version (Thankfully in one sense) but the players of Dune II will not be nearly as bewildered. The game version for HP48 was initially created by Antoine and has been translated by Lilian Pigallio

I The History

The control of the galaxy is made possible to the group that collects the most spice, allowing transport in space, which is found on only one planet: Dune. Well on Dune all the great groups seek to take over, and conflicts break out for control of the planet. You belong to one of these groups and your goal is simple: to take the control of Dune by force.

II Synopsis of the Game

The game consists of several levels, very quickly becoming more difficult. This summarizes the game in few points: you begin with a starting base, some tanks and a few points (the points correspond to collected spice). You have to build up your base, collect spice and destroy the enemies present on the map.

III General Operation of the Game

The game is not very complicated to play:

-          To move:  use the numeric keypad (1 2 3 4 6 7 8 9)

-          To select a building or a unit:  use key (5) with cursor positioned over object (when a building or unit is selected, a menu appears at the bottom)

-          To select a menu choice:  use keys (4) or (6) then confirm with key (5)

-          To leave menu without confirming:  use (/) key

-          To move quickly on the map:  use direction movement keys

-          To change between grayscale and Black & White:  use (1/X) key

-          To display the map:  use (NXT) key

-          To exit the game: use (<-) back return or (ON) key

When you exit the game, the HP returns a save of the game as a string object on the stack: save the string to a variable (for example ' SAVE' then STO) and then place it on the stack for game resume. If there is no save object on the stack, the game resumes at the beginning.

IV Manual of the Game

Terrains

Hard ground: it is the only place you can build your buildings.

Rocks: You cannot pass or build on this ground.

Sand: Practically all the map is sand, there is spice (see below), and the sandworms can circulate under this one. The sandworms can swallow all your Tanks or Harvesters.

Field: collect spice with Harvesters.

Strong concentration of spice: here you will be able to collect spice faster.

Buildings

The Construction Yard:  it enables you to build all the buildings thus it is of primary importance.

The power Center:  produces electricity necessary for good functioning buildings. Energy shortages will be posted. (aka Windtrap)

The Refinery:  empties the cargo of your Harvesters in order to convert spice into points. A Harvester is built with this building. You can have several Refineries to collect more quickly.

The Light Factory:  builds the basic units (Trike, Fast Tank, Mobile and Portant).

The Heavy Factory:  builds the heavy units (Harvester, War Tank, Destroyer, Missile Launch).

The Reparation:  as its name indicates it, this building makes it possible to repair your units.

The Silo Storage:  makes it possible to store more spice.

The Light Wall:  mainly allows you to connect your buildings (lets you leave a little space between two).

The Heavy Wall:  prevents the enemy from penetrating your base.

The Turret:  to defend your base, place Turret at the strategic places.

The Turret - R:  Rocket Turret possessing a greater range than the Turret.

Units

The Trike: the Trike is a light unit perfect at the beginning, however, it is especially useful for exploring the ground, thanks to its speed.

The Fast Tank: a unit with average speed and power, perfect for the first levels.

The War Tank: a unit with more power.

The Destroyer: with this unit, one enters the heavy tanks.

The Missile Launch: equivalent of the rocket launcher in PC version, perfect at long distance.

The Harvester: the unit used to collect the spice.

The Mobile: a very practical unit that allows the construction of another construction yard. It thus makes it possible to establish a second base.

The Portant: you cannot control this unit, which moves the units that have a long distance to traverse. Essential for moving the Harvesters quickly.

V Quick Introduction to Strategy to be adopted

You can use this strategy to succeed:
1) Distribute and direct your units in order to defend from enemies that approach your base.
2) Start to look at where you are located on the map.
3) Start to explore the ground in the search of spice.
4) Construct a Power Center.
5) Construct a Refinery.
6) Seek spice with the Harvester.
7) If you have a little time and your defense can handle attacks, you can build second refinery.
8) Construct a Heavy Factory. If you have time, you can build Harvesters to collect more quickly. If you have problems of defense, build units of war.
9) Construct a Light Factory. If you have time, build Portants to accelerate the movement of your troops (and especially of your Harvesters).
10) Set up a strong impenetrable defense.
11) Collect spice and build units.
12) If all goes well, you can attack ;) .

Additional Notes:
- Never leave your Harvesters without a Tank beside/nearby just in case, or
- It happens that the Harvesters remain close to the base and wait, so supervise them!
- Do not HESITATE over defense.
- Pay attention to the sandworms: they can swallow your units. They move only in sand.
- Do not HESITATE to make a second base.
- Well protect your Construction Yard and your Harvesters from attacks.
- Notice the messages posted at the bottom and act on them.
- Pay attention! Always keep a point reserve (especially at the beginning!).
